Frequently Asked Questions

Electrical issues can be confusing and sometimes concerning. This FAQ covers common questions and basic troubleshooting tips to help you better understand what’s going on in your home or business. While some issues have simple explanations, others require professional attention to ensure safety and code compliance. If something doesn’t feel right or the problem keeps returning, it’s always best to consult a licensed electrician.

This information is intended for general guidance only and is not a substitute for professional electrical evaluation or service.

1. Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

A breaker trips to protect your home from overloads, short circuits, or ground faults. If it trips repeatedly, unplug devices on that circuit and reset it once. If the issue continues, it’s best to have an electrician inspect the circuit.

Yes—resetting a breaker once is generally safe. If it trips again immediately or frequently, stop resetting it and contact an electrician. Repeated trips usually indicate an underlying issue.

Flickering lights can be caused by loose bulbs, aging fixtures, voltage fluctuations, or wiring issues. If flickering affects multiple rooms or happens frequently, it may point to a larger electrical problem.

Outlets or switches should never feel hot. Warmth can indicate loose wiring or an overloaded circuit. Stop using the outlet and contact an electrician as soon as possible.

You may need a panel upgrade if your home has an older panel, frequently trips breakers, uses fuses, or can’t support modern electrical demands like EV chargers or new appliances. An evaluation can determine if an upgrade is needed.

GFCI outlets trip when they detect moisture or imbalance to prevent shock. Try resetting it once and unplugging nearby devices. If it continues to trip, the outlet or wiring may need service.

Extension cords are meant for temporary use only. Long-term use can overload circuits and increase fire risk. If you rely on extension cords regularly, installing additional outlets is a safer solution.

Call an electrician immediately if you notice burning smells, buzzing sounds, sparks, visible damage, or repeated breaker trips. These can indicate serious safety hazards.

Simple upgrades like LED lighting, smart switches, and updated fixtures can reduce energy use. An electrician can also recommend solutions tailored to your home’s layout and electrical system.
